Can parrots eat coffee?

Coffee · Treats & Drinks

No. Caffeine causes cardiac arrhythmia and hyperactivity in birds — a few sips of coffee can be fatal for a small parrot.

Keeper's noteParrots are drawn to whatever is in your cup. Keep mugs covered or out of reach — a curious beak dips fast. Herbal infusions like plain chamomile are the one safe 'tea' exception.

Why coffee is dangerous for parrots

A parrot's tiny body and fast metabolism turn even a small dose of caffeine into a dangerous one. Caffeine raises heart rate, triggers arrhythmias, and can cause hyperactivity, tremors, and cardiac arrest. This applies to coffee, black and green tea, energy drinks, and caffeinated sodas alike.

My parrot already ate some — what now?

Remove all remaining food from the cage, note what and roughly how much was eaten, and call an avian vet or an animal poison control hotline immediately. Do not wait for symptoms — early treatment makes the difference.
