Macaws are the giants of the parrot world, and uniquely among common pet parrots they need more healthy fat in their diet — in the wild, several macaw species eat a lot of palm nuts. That means nuts that would be an occasional treat for a budgie are a more legitimate part of a macaw's diet. Their powerful beaks also make in-shell, hard-textured foods ideal foraging.
Macaws tolerate — and to a degree need — more fat than smaller parrots, which is why nuts like walnuts, almonds, and (their classic favourite) palm nuts have a real place in a macaw diet. This is species-specific: don't apply it to budgies or cockatiels.
A macaw's beak can crack a Brazil nut. In-shell nuts, whole vegetables, and tough foraging items provide both enrichment and beak conditioning — far better than everything pre-shelled.
The higher fat allowance doesn't replace vegetables. Macaws still need vitamin-A-rich veg (sweet potato, carrot, dark greens) and a varied diet to stay healthy.
