Tamarind pulp is non-toxic and brings some minerals, but it's both very sour and high in sugar, so only small amounts occasionally. Skip sweetened tamarind candy and paste.
Keeper's noteOffer a small bit of the natural pulp (seeds removed) to curious birds. Avoid tamarind candy, paste, and sauces, which are sugar- and often salt-heavy.
What to watch out for with tamarind
The sticky pulp of tamarind is safe and contains some B vitamins and minerals, but it's an intense combination of acidity and sugar. A little is fine for birds that like the tang, but the sweetened tamarind products common in stores (candy, concentrate) are loaded with added sugar.
How to serve it
A small amount of natural pulp, seeds removed.
Never sweetened tamarind candy, concentrate, or sauce.
