A small piece of plain tortilla is safe but nutritionally empty, much like bread — fine as an occasional nibble, ideally whole-grain and low-salt.
Keeper's noteA fingernail-sized piece of plain tortilla now and then is harmless. Skip flavored wraps, and never tortilla chips (salt) or anything with garlic/onion seasoning.
What to watch out for with tortilla
Plain corn or flour tortillas aren't toxic, but they're refined starch with added salt and sometimes lard or preservatives, offering a parrot little. Corn tortillas (just masa) tend to be simpler than flour ones. Fried tortilla products — chips, taco shells — add salt and oil and should be skipped.
How to serve it
Plain, low-salt, ideally whole-grain or plain corn tortilla.
